Ulster County To Host First National Drive Electric Week Event

Kingston, NY – Ulster County Executive Mike Hein is pleased to announce that Ulster County is hosting its first National Drive Electric Week event: Sustainable Saturday Parking Lot Party on September 17, 2016 from 11am-3pm in the parking lot of the Ulster County Office Building located at 244 Fair Street in Kingston, New York.  The event is co-sponsored locally by the City of Kingston, New Yorkers for Clean Power, Sustainable Hudson Valley, Kingston Climate Smart Committee, Solarize Hudson Valley, the Sierra Club, and RUPCO. Local dealerships will be on site to showcase all-electric and plug-in hybrid-electric vehicle models currently on the market, as well as to provide test drives. Bike Friendly Kingston will also be offering free bike repair and helmet fittings, and there will be entertainment and activities for children.  This year, National Drive Electric Week is being held from September 10 – September 18 throughout the nation.

“Ulster County has the largest municipal network of electric vehicle charging station sites in the State of New York, including New York City, and we are working with Central Hudson and local businesses to expand Electric Vehicle charging station infrastructure in the County even more,” said Ulster County Executive Mike Hein. “I urge residents and visitors to participate in `Sustainable Saturday´ as we help promote the use of sustainable fuel vehicles and continue to keep Ulster County at the forefront of environmental stewardship.”

“National Drive Electric Week is a nationwide initiative to heighten awareness of the widespread availability of plug-in vehicles and highlight the benefits of all-electric and plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles, trucks and more,” said Amanda LaValle, Coordinator of the Ulster County Department of the Environment.   “This is a great venue for the public to familiarize themselves with the technology of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids and discover the various locations of the County’s network of EV charging stations as well as information about local, state and federal incentives to drive electric.”

The Sustainable Saturday Parking Lot Party will consist of:

  • An Electric Vehicle Auto Show and test drives;

  • Information about Ulster County’s electric vehicle initiative and public charging network;

  • Information regarding renewable energy and energy efficiency options, rain gardens and composting;

  • Free bike repair and helmet fittings by Bike Friendly Kingston;

  • Live music and entertainment; and

  • Activities for children.

In 2015, Ulster County installed nine electric vehicle (EV) charging stations powered by 100% renewable energy that are used to charge plug-in hybrids in the County’s vehicle fleet. The charging stations are also available for public use and are free of charge, an effort that is sponsored by the Ulster County Regional Chamber of Commerce.
